Robert Baden-Powell (1857–1941), later known as Lord Baden-Powell, was a British Army officer, writer and founder of the worldwide Scouting movement. His military career included service in Africa, where he became famous for his role during the Siege of Mafeking during the Second Boer War. In 1908 he published Scouting for Boys, a book that inspired the development of organised youth scouting. The first experimental Scout camp was held on Brownsea Island in 1907, laying the foundations for a movement that would eventually spread around the world. Baden-Powell was married to Olave St Clair Soames, who became a major figure in the Girl Guides movement.
