Guy Fawkes (1570–1606), also known as Guido Fawkes, was an English Catholic conspirator who became infamous for his role in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Fawkes and his fellow conspirators planned to assassinate King James I and destroy the Houses of Parliament during the State Opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605. Fawkes was discovered guarding barrels of gunpowder beneath the Palace of Westminster in the early hours of 5 November and arrested. After torture, he revealed information about the conspiracy and was later executed in January 1606. The failure of the Gunpowder Plot is commemorated every year in Britain on Bonfire Night, 5 November, with fireworks, bonfires and effigies of Guy Fawkes.
