Leonidas I was King of Sparta and one of the most famous warrior kings of ancient Greece. He ruled during the early 5th century BC and became immortalised for his heroic stand against the Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. Leading a small force of Spartan and allied Greek warriors, Leonidas fought the vastly larger Persian army commanded by Xerxes I. Although the Greeks were ultimately defeated, Leonidas and his warriors became legendary symbols of courage, sacrifice, discipline and resistance. Married to Gorgo, daughter of the Spartan king Cleomenes I, Leonidas has remained an iconic figure of Ancient Greece, Spartan warfare and military history for more than two thousand years.
