Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein (1887–1976), better known as “Monty”, was one of Britain’s most famous and influential military commanders of the Second World War. A veteran of the First World War, Montgomery became renowned for his disciplined leadership, careful planning and determination. His greatest victory came at the Second Battle of El Alamein in 1942, where British and Commonwealth forces defeated Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps, marking a major turning point in the North African campaign. Montgomery later commanded Allied forces during the invasion of Normandy and the liberation of Western Europe. Married twice, he became one of Britain’s most recognisable military figures and remains an enduring symbol of British wartime leadership, military history and the Second World War.
