Christopher Columbus (1451–1506) was an Italian-born explorer and navigator whose voyages across the Atlantic fundamentally changed world history. Sailing under the sponsorship of the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, Columbus made his first voyage in 1492, reaching the Caribbean while seeking a westward route to Asia. He completed four voyages across the Atlantic and opened sustained contact between Europe and the Americas, beginning a period of exploration, colonisation and global exchange. Columbus was married to Filipa Moniz Perestrelo and had two sons, Diego and Ferdinand. His legacy is highly significant but also deeply controversial because European colonisation brought catastrophic consequences for Indigenous peoples. Today he remains an important and debated figure in the history of exploration.
