Cleopatra VII Philopator (69–30 BC) was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt and one of the most famous women in ancient history. A highly intelligent and politically skilled monarch, Cleopatra became queen in 51 BC and worked to preserve Egypt’s independence during the turbulent final years of the Roman Republic. She was closely allied with Julius Caesar, with whom she had a son, Caesarion, and later formed a political and personal relationship with Mark Antony, with whom she had three children. After their defeat by Octavian at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, Cleopatra died in Alexandria in 30 BC. Her death marked the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty and Egypt’s incorporation into the Roman Empire.
