Price range: £36.99 through £37.99

Emmeline Pankhurst (1858–1928) was a British political activist and one of the most influential leaders of the women’s suffrage movement. Founder of the Women’s Social and Political Union in 1903, she became a leading campaigner for women’s right to vote in Britain and helped bring the issue of female suffrage to the centre of national politics. The WSPU adopted the slogan “Deeds, not words” and became known for increasingly militant tactics, including demonstrations, civil disobedience and hunger strikes. Pankhurst was arrested numerous times for her activism. The Representation of the People Act 1918 gave some British women over the age of 30 the right to vote, while equal voting rights with men followed in 1928, the year Pankhurst died. She remains an iconic figure in women’s rights and British political history.
