Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874–1922) was one of Britain and Ireland’s greatest polar explorers and a legendary figure in the history of Antarctic exploration. He first travelled to Antarctica with the Discovery Expedition and later led the Nimrod Expedition, reaching within approximately 97 miles of the South Pole in 1909. His greatest achievement came during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917, when his ship Endurance became trapped and was eventually crushed by Antarctic ice. Shackleton successfully led all members of his crew to safety after an extraordinary survival journey involving the lifeboats and a perilous voyage to South Georgia. Married to Emily Mary Dorman, he died in 1922 during another Antarctic expedition. His leadership, courage and determination have made him an enduring symbol of exploration and resilience.
