Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist, mathematician and philosopher whose discoveries transformed our understanding of the universe and helped establish modern science. Using an improved telescope, Galileo made groundbreaking observations of the Moon, discovered four large moons orbiting Jupiter, observed the phases of Venus and identified sunspots, providing powerful evidence supporting the heliocentric model of the solar system. His support for the ideas of Nicolaus Copernicus brought him into conflict with the Roman Catholic Church, and in 1633 he was tried by the Inquisition and forced to formally recant his views. Galileo spent his later years under house arrest. Married to Marina Gamba, he became one of the most influential scientific thinkers in history and is often called the “father of modern observational astronomy”.
