George Stephenson (1781–1848) was an English engineer and pioneer of the railway industry who became known as the “Father of Railways”. Born in Wylam, Northumberland, Stephenson developed practical steam locomotives and played a crucial role in transforming railway transportation during the Industrial Revolution. His locomotive Rocket famously won the Rainhill Trials in 1829, demonstrating the potential of steam-powered rail travel. Stephenson was also involved in the development of the Stockton and Darlington Railway and the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. His work helped establish railway engineering and revolutionised transport, industry and commerce in Britain.
