Harald Hardrada (c. 1015–1066) was King of Norway from 1046 until his death and one of the most famous Viking warriors of the medieval period. Born Harald Sigurdsson, he spent much of his early life as a soldier and adventurer, fighting in Scandinavia and serving as a commander in the Byzantine Varangian Guard. He eventually became King of Norway and attempted to expand his influence into England. In 1066 Harald invaded England and defeated the English at the Battle of Fulford, but his campaign ended at the Battle of Stamford Bridge on 25 September 1066, where he was killed by the forces of King Harold Godwinson. His death came only weeks before the Norman Conquest, making Harald Hardrada one of the most famous Viking kings in English history.
