Harry Patch (1898–2009), known as “The Last Tommy”, was one of the last surviving British soldiers who fought in the First World War. Born in Somerset, Patch served as a machine gunner with the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry and was wounded during the Third Battle of Ypres, also known as Passchendaele, in 1917. He later became a powerful advocate for remembrance and reconciliation, particularly with former German soldiers.
