Lady Godiva was an 11th-century Anglo-Saxon noblewoman and the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, remembered through one of Britain’s most famous medieval legends. According to the story, Godiva repeatedly pleaded with her husband to reduce the heavy taxation imposed on the people of Coventry. Leofric supposedly agreed on the condition that she ride naked through the city, and Godiva accepted the challenge, covering herself with her long hair. The famous story of “Peeping Tom”, who allegedly watched her despite instructions not to, was added to later versions of the legend. While historians debate how much of the story is factual, Lady Godiva has become an enduring symbol of Coventry and medieval England. A Lady Godiva statue represents medieval history, legend, courage and one of Britain’s most recognisable historical figures.
