Sir Richard Grenville (1542–1591) was an English soldier, explorer, privateer and naval commander remembered particularly for his extraordinary final battle against a much larger Spanish fleet during the Anglo-Spanish War. Born into a prominent Devon family, Grenville became involved in English overseas exploration and served in Ireland before commanding the famous warship Revenge. In 1591, during the Battle of Flores in the Azores, Revenge was surrounded by a vastly superior Spanish force. According to later accounts, Grenville refused to surrender and fought for many hours before being captured. He died from his wounds shortly afterwards. The story of the last stand of the Revenge became legendary and helped establish Grenville’s reputation as a symbol of Elizabethan courage, determination and naval heroism.
