Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868–1912) was a British Royal Navy officer and Antarctic explorer who became one of the most famous figures of the heroic age of polar exploration. Scott first travelled to Antarctica as leader of the Discovery Expedition from 1901 to 1904 and later commanded the Terra Nova Expedition, whose goal was to reach the South Pole. Scott and his team reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to discover that Roald Amundsen’s Norwegian expedition had arrived first. Scott and his four companions died during their return journey, with their bodies discovered months later. Married to the sculptor Kathleen Bruce, Scott became a symbol of courage, endurance and sacrifice, although modern assessments also examine the planning and logistical decisions behind his expedition.
