Caligula, Roman Emperor from AD 37 to 41, was the third emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and one of the most notorious figures in Roman history. Born Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus in AD 12, he was the son of the popular Roman general Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder. His early reign was initially welcomed by the Roman people, but ancient sources describe his later rule as increasingly cruel, extravagant and unpredictable. Caligula was assassinated by members of his own Praetorian Guard in AD 41 after only four years as emperor. Although some ancient accounts may have been exaggerated by hostile writers, his reputation as a controversial and infamous Roman emperor has endured for centuries.
