Marcus Aurelius (AD 121–180) was Roman Emperor from AD 161 to 180 and one of the most respected rulers of the ancient world. A member of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, Marcus Aurelius is remembered both as a powerful emperor and as a philosopher of Stoicism. His famous work Meditations provides an insight into his thoughts on duty, self-discipline, morality and leadership. Much of his reign was occupied by military campaigns, including wars against Germanic tribes along the Roman frontier and conflict with the Parthian Empire. Married to Faustina the Younger, Marcus Aurelius was the father of Commodus and became known as the “Philosopher Emperor”, leaving a remarkable legacy in Roman history and Western philosophy.
