Sir Francis Drake (c. 1540–1596) was an English explorer, navigator, privateer and naval commander who became one of the most celebrated figures of the Elizabethan age. In 1577 he embarked on a voyage that became the second circumnavigation of the Earth, returning to England in 1580 aboard the Golden Hind and becoming the first Englishman to complete a circumnavigation. Drake played a crucial role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and became a national hero in England. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth I aboard the Golden Hind, he was also involved in controversial privateering and attacks on Spanish and Portuguese possessions. Drake married Elizabeth Sydenham but had no children. He died in Panama in 1596 and remains an iconic figure of British maritime history.
