Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769–1839) was a distinguished British Royal Navy officer and one of the most famous figures associated with Admiral Horatio Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar. Hardy served as Nelson’s flag captain aboard HMS Victory during the decisive battle on 21 October 1805. Nelson’s dying words are traditionally associated with Hardy, including the famous “Kiss me, Hardy”, although the exact wording remains debated by historians. Hardy went on to enjoy a distinguished naval career, eventually becoming First Naval Lord. He was married twice and was regarded as a highly respected officer throughout his life.
