Ulysses S. Grant (1822–1885) was an American military commander and politician who became the leading Union general during the final stages of the American Civil War and later the 18th President of the United States. Grant achieved major victories at Fort Donelson and Vicksburg before becoming General-in-Chief of the Union Army in 1864. His campaigns ultimately forced Confederate General Robert E. Lee to surrender at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865. Grant later served two terms as President from 1869 to 1877, supporting Reconstruction and the rights of formerly enslaved people. Married to Julia Dent Grant, he remains an important figure in American military and political history and one of the central personalities of the Civil War.
