Walter Tull (1888–1918) was a pioneering British footballer and First World War officer who broke important racial barriers. A talented forward for Tottenham Hotspur, Tull became one of Britain’s first Black professional outfield footballers. During the First World War he served with distinction and became the first Black officer to command white British troops, before being killed in action in 1918.
