Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545–1598) was a Korean naval commander and national hero renowned for his extraordinary victories during the Japanese invasions of Korea from 1592 to 1598. Despite facing powerful Japanese forces and severe shortages of ships and supplies, Yi achieved a remarkable series of naval victories through disciplined tactics, strategic skill and knowledge of the Korean coastline. He is famously associated with the turtle ship, or geobukseon, an armoured warship traditionally credited with playing an important role in his campaigns. Yi was killed in action at the Battle of Noryang in 1598, with the famous words “The battle is at its height; do not announce my death” attributed to him. Today he is celebrated as one of Korea’s greatest military commanders and naval heroes.
