Martin Luther King Jr. (1929–1968) was an American Baptist minister, civil rights leader and one of the most influential advocates of nonviolent social change in modern history. King became a leading figure in the American Civil Rights Movement, campaigning against racial segregation and discrimination through peaceful protest, speeches and civil disobedience. He played a major role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped secure the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965. His famous “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered during the March on Washington in 1963, became one of the most celebrated speeches in American history. King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and was assassinated in Memphis on 4 April 1968. His legacy continues to influence human rights movements worldwide.
