Tommie Smith, born in 1944, is an American former track and field athlete who became an enduring symbol of the fight for racial equality after his historic gesture at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Smith won the gold medal in the 200 metres on 16 October 1968, setting a world record of 19.83 seconds. During the medal ceremony, Smith and fellow American athlete John Carlos raised black-gloved fists in a silent protest against racial discrimination and inequality, while Australian silver medallist Peter Norman supported their protest by wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge. Smith and Carlos were subsequently suspended from the US Olympic team.
