Alan Turing (1912–1954) was a British mathematician, computer scientist, codebreaker and pioneering thinker whose work helped lay the foundations of modern computing and artificial intelligence. During the Second World War, Turing played a crucial role at Bletchley Park in Britain’s efforts to break German military codes, including the Enigma cipher, helping Allied forces gain vital intelligence. His 1936 concept of the Turing machine became a fundamental idea in computer science, while his later work explored artificial intelligence and mathematical biology. Turing was prosecuted for homosexuality in 1952, at a time when homosexual acts were illegal in Britain, and died in 1954. He was formally pardoned in 2013.
