Born around 849, Alfred was the youngest son of King Æthelwulf of Wessex and became king in 871 following the death of his brother Æthelred. His reign was dominated by the struggle against Viking armies that had conquered much of England. Alfred’s decisive victory at the Battle of Edington in 878 forced the Viking leader Guthrum to accept peace and Christianity. He subsequently strengthened Wessex with fortified burhs, improved military organisation and developed a fleet to counter Viking attacks. Alfred was also a great supporter of education and literacy, attracting scholars to his court and encouraging the translation of important texts into Old English. His occupation of London in 886 strengthened his position as the leading Anglo-Saxon ruler. Alfred died on 26 October 899 and was buried at Winchester. His reign laid important foundations for the eventual unification of England.
