Matilda of Flanders was born around 1031 and was the daughter of Baldwin V, Count of Flanders. She married William, Duke of Normandy, around 1051–1052, despite initial opposition from the Church. When William conquered England in 1066, Matilda became Queen of England and was crowned alongside him at Westminster Abbey on 11 May 1068. She played an important role in governing Normandy while William was in England and acted as a trusted political partner. The couple had at least nine children, including William II, Henry I and Adela of Normandy. Matilda died on 2 November 1083 at Caen and was buried at the Abbey of Sainte-Trinité. She is remembered as one of the most influential Norman queens.
