Rollo of Normandy was a Viking leader, probably born around c. 860, who became the founder of the Norman dynasty in France. After years of Viking raiding, Rollo reached an agreement with the Frankish king Charles the Simple in 911, receiving lands around the Seine in exchange for accepting Christianity and becoming Charles’s vassal. This territory became known as Normandy, named after the Northmen who settled there. Rollo was baptised and adopted the Christian name Robert. His descendants became an important European dynasty, eventually producing William the Conqueror, who invaded England in 1066. Rollo died around 928, leaving behind a powerful principality that would play a major role in European history.
