Edgar, known as “the Peaceful”, was born around 943 and became King of Mercia and Northumbria in 957 before becoming King of all England in 959. His reign was characterised by relative peace and strong royal authority. Edgar was crowned at Bath in 973 in a lavish ceremony that helped establish traditions of English royal coronation. He supported the reforms of Dunstan of Canterbury, promoting monastic revival and religious reform. Edgar also maintained a strong navy and military presence, helping deter Viking attacks. He died on 8 July 975 at Winchester, aged around 32, and was buried at Glastonbury Abbey. His reign is remembered as one of the most peaceful and prosperous periods of Anglo-Saxon England.
