William the Conqueror was born around 1028 at Falaise in Normandy and became Duke of Normandy in 1035. He claimed the English throne following the death of Edward the Confessor in 1066, arguing that Edward had promised him the crown. After Harold Godwinson was crowned king, William launched his invasion of England. He defeated Harold at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066 and was crowned King of England at Westminster Abbey on 25 December 1066. William introduced Norman rule, built castles across England and commissioned the Domesday Book in 1085–1086 to record land ownership and wealth. He died on 9 September 1087 at Rouen and was buried at Caen. His conquest permanently transformed England’s language, culture and aristocracy.
