Harold I, known as Harefoot, was born around 1016 and became King of England in 1035 following the death of his father, Cnut the Great. His succession was disputed by his half-brother Harthacnut, who was supported by their mother Emma of Normandy. Harold was initially appointed regent but was recognised as king in 1037 after Harthacnut remained abroad in Denmark. He spent much of his short reign dealing with opposition and political disputes. Harold died at Oxford on 17 March 1040, aged around 24, before Harthacnut could challenge him directly. He was buried at Westminster Abbey, although his remains were later reportedly removed. Harthacnut succeeded him as King of England.
