Harthacnut was born around 1018, the son of Cnut the Great and Emma of Normandy. He inherited the Danish throne in 1035 but faced difficulties securing his position there, allowing his half-brother Harold Harefoot to become King of England. Following Harold’s death in 1040, Harthacnut became King of England and returned from Denmark. His reign was unpopular due to heavy taxation required to maintain his large military forces. In 1042, while attending a wedding feast at Lambeth, Harthacnut reportedly collapsed and died suddenly after drinking. He was only around 23 years old. He was buried at Winchester Cathedral and was succeeded by his half-brother Edward the Confessor, ending the Danish royal dynasty in England.
