Henry I was born around 1068, the youngest son of William the Conqueror, and became King of England in 1100 following the mysterious death of his brother William II. He defeated his elder brother Robert Curthose at the Battle of Tinchebray in 1106, bringing Normandy under his control. Henry became known for strengthening royal administration, reforming the legal system and developing England’s financial institutions. His only legitimate son, William Adelin, died in the White Ship disaster of 1120, creating a succession crisis. Henry subsequently named his daughter Matilda as his heir. He died on 1 December 1135 in Normandy, reportedly after eating too many lampreys. His death led to a civil war between Matilda and her cousin Stephen.
