Eadred was born around 923 and was the younger brother of King Edmund I. He became King of England in 946 following Edmund’s murder and immediately faced renewed Viking resistance in Northumbria. In 947, the Northumbrians accepted Eadred as their king, but they later supported the Viking ruler Eric Bloodaxe. Eadred responded with military campaigns against Northumbria and eventually defeated the rebellion. In 954, Eric Bloodaxe was expelled from York and was subsequently killed at the Battle of Stainmore, bringing Northumbria firmly under English control. Eadred suffered from poor health throughout much of his reign and died on 23 November 955 at Frome in Somerset, aged around 32. He was buried at Winchester and succeeded by his nephew, Eadwig. His short reign helped secure the territorial unity achieved by earlier Anglo-Saxon kings.
