Edgar Ætheling was born around 1053, the grandson of Edmund Ironside and the last male member of the royal house descended from Alfred the Great. Following the death of Edward the Confessor in 1066, Edgar was briefly proclaimed king by leading English nobles, but he was never crowned. William the Conqueror’s victory at Hastings made Edgar’s position impossible to maintain, and he eventually submitted to William. Edgar later supported several rebellions against Norman rule and spent periods in Scotland and Normandy. He participated in the First Crusade in 1098, travelling to the Holy Land with Norman forces. Edgar lived into the early 12th century, dying sometime after 1125, although the exact date of his death is unknown. He is remembered as England’s last Anglo-Saxon claimant to the throne.
