Sweyn Forkbeard was born around 960 and became King of Denmark before expanding his power into England. He launched repeated campaigns against Æthelred II and eventually invaded England in 1013. Sweyn’s forces quickly conquered much of the country, and he was recognised as King of England in December 1013, forcing Æthelred into exile in Normandy. His reign in England was remarkably brief. On 3 February 1014, only weeks after gaining the throne, Sweyn died suddenly at Gainsborough. His son Cnut inherited his claim to England, although Æthelred temporarily returned to power. Sweyn’s invasion established the foundations for the Scandinavian dynasty that would later rule England under Cnut the Great.
