Richard II was born on 6 January 1367 at Bordeaux and became King of England in 1377, aged just ten, following the death of his grandfather Edward III. He personally took control of government in the 1380s and became known for his strong belief in royal authority. In 1381, he famously confronted rebels during the Peasants’ Revolt, meeting them at Smithfield and promising reforms before the rebellion was crushed. Richard’s later rule became increasingly unpopular, particularly among powerful nobles. In 1399, Henry Bolingbroke invaded England and forced Richard to abdicate. Richard was imprisoned at Pontefract Castle, where he died in February 1400, probably through starvation or murder. His death marked the end of the direct Plantagenet line.
