Harold Godwinson, also known as King Harold II, was born around 1022 and became King of England on 6 January 1066, following the death of Edward the Confessor. His claim was immediately challenged by William, Duke of Normandy, and King Harald Hardrada of Norway. Harold defeated Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge on 25 September 1066, but was forced to march south to confront William. On 14 October 1066, the English army was defeated at the Battle of Hastings. Harold was killed during the battle, traditionally said to have been struck in the eye by an arrow, although the exact circumstances remain uncertain. His death ended Anglo-Saxon royal rule and allowed William the Conqueror to seize the English throne.
