Edmund I was born in 921 and was the son of King Edward the Elder and half-brother of Athelstan. He became King of England in 939, inheriting a kingdom that had recently been consolidated by his predecessor. In 940, Viking forces regained control of York and parts of the Midlands, but Edmund successfully reconquered the Five Boroughs in 942.
