Cnut, also known as Canute the Great, was born around 990 and became King of England in 1016 following the death of Edmund II Ironside. He later became King of Denmark in 1018 and King of Norway in 1028, creating a powerful North Sea empire. Cnut married Emma of Normandy, the widow of Æthelred II, in 1017, strengthening his claim to the English throne. He became known as a capable administrator and supported the Church, while maintaining strong links with Scandinavia and continental Europe. The famous story of Cnut commanding the sea to stop illustrates his awareness that even a king could not control nature. He died at Shaftesbury on 12 November 1035 and was buried at Winchester.
