Edmund II, known as “Ironside”, was born around 990 and became King of England in April 1016 following the death of his father, Æthelred II. He immediately faced a major invasion by Cnut, son of Sweyn Forkbeard. Edmund fought several battles against the Danes, including victories at Penselwood and Sherston, but suffered defeat at the Battle of Assandun on 18 October 1016. The two kings subsequently agreed to divide England, with Edmund ruling Wessex and Cnut controlling much of the rest of the country. Edmund died suddenly on 30 November 1016, probably at Oxfordshire, although later stories claimed he was murdered. He was succeeded by Cnut, who became ruler of the whole kingdom.
