Æthelred II, known as “the Unready”, was born around 966 and became King of England in 978 following the murder of his half-brother Edward the Martyr. His reign was dominated by increasingly severe Viking attacks, and in 991 English forces suffered a major defeat at the Battle of Maldon. Æthelred attempted to buy peace through payments known as Danegeld, but Viking raids continued. On 13 November 1002, he ordered the St Brice’s Day massacre, targeting Danish communities in England. In 1013, the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard invaded and forced Æthelred into exile. Æthelred returned briefly in 1014 but died on 23 April 1016 during renewed conflict with Sweyn’s son, Cnut. Despite his nickname, “Unready” more accurately derives from an Old English term meaning “ill-advised.”
