Billy the Kid, born Henry McCarty and also known as William H. Bonney, was one of the most famous outlaws of the American Old West. Born around 1859, he became involved in the violent conflicts of New Mexico during the Lincoln County War and was accused of killing several men. His reputation grew through newspaper reports and frontier folklore, transforming him into a legendary gunslinger and outlaw. Billy the Kid was captured and sentenced to death but escaped from the Lincoln County jail in April 1881. He was eventually tracked down and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett at Fort Sumner, New Mexico, on 14 July 1881, reportedly aged only 21. His short life has inspired countless Western films, books and works of art.
