Dolores Ibárruri (1895–1989), known as “La Pasionaria”, was a Spanish communist politician and a major figure of the Spanish Civil War. A passionate and powerful orator, she became internationally recognised for her support of the Spanish Republican cause and for the famous slogan “¡No pasarán!” (“They shall not pass!”). Born in the Basque region of Spain, Ibárruri rose to become a leading member of the Communist Party of Spain and served as its president later in life. Following the Republican defeat in 1939, she lived in exile in the Soviet Union for many years before returning to Spain after the end of Franco’s dictatorship.
