Nero (AD 37–68) was Roman Emperor from AD 54 to 68 and the last ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. He became emperor at the age of 16 and initially ruled under the influence of his mother Agrippina the Younger and his advisers. Nero is one of the most controversial figures in Roman history, remembered for political violence, extravagant behaviour and his troubled relationship with the Roman Senate. His reign also witnessed the Great Fire of Rome in AD 64, although the famous story that Nero “fiddled while Rome burned” is almost certainly a later myth. Nero was married several times and died by suicide in AD 68, ending the Julio-Claudian dynasty and helping trigger the Year of the Four Emperors.
