Sir Walter Raleigh (c. 1552–1618) was an English explorer, soldier, courtier, writer and adventurer who became one of the most colourful figures of the Elizabethan age. A favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, Raleigh played a major role in England’s attempts to establish colonies in North America and is strongly associated with the failed Roanoke Colony. He was also involved in military campaigns in Ireland and became a prominent member of the Elizabethan court. Raleigh married Elizabeth “Bess” Throckmorton, a lady-in-waiting to the Queen, without Elizabeth I’s permission, causing him to fall from royal favour. Later imprisoned in the Tower of London, Raleigh was eventually executed in 1618. His legacy encompasses exploration, colonial history, Elizabethan England, literature and maritime adventure.
