Isabella of France was born around 1295 and was the daughter of King Philip IV of France. She married Edward II of England in 1308, becoming Queen of England. Isabella became increasingly opposed to Edward’s favourites and political policies, particularly the influence of Hugh Despenser. In 1325, she travelled to France and formed an alliance with Roger Mortimer, leading an invasion of England in 1326. Edward II was forced to abdicate in 1327, and Isabella became a powerful political figure during the early reign of her son Edward III. Her influence declined when Edward took control of government and executed Mortimer in 1330. Isabella lived in retirement at Castle Rising until her death on 22 August 1358. She was buried at Christ Church Greyfriars in London.
