King Arthur was a legendary British ruler traditionally associated with the late 5th or early 6th century, although his historical existence remains uncertain. He is said to have defended Britain against invading Saxons and became associated with Camelot, Excalibur, Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table. His story was popularised by Geoffrey of Monmouth in his Historia Regum Britanniae, written around 1136. Arthur’s traditional reign is often placed around c. 500–c. 537. His final battle, the Battle of Camlann, is traditionally dated to c. 537, where he was supposedly mortally wounded. Later medieval writers greatly expanded the legend, creating many of the stories familiar today. Despite the lack of reliable evidence for his life, Arthur became one of Britain’s most enduring legendary kings and remains a powerful symbol of British history and mythology.
