Edward the Martyr was born around 962 and became King of England in 975 following the death of his father, Edgar the Peaceful. His accession was disputed by supporters of his younger half-brother Æthelred, creating political divisions within the kingdom. Edward was strongly supported by Archbishop Dunstan and other leading nobles. On 18 March 978, while visiting his stepmother Ælfthryth and his half-brother at Corfe Castle, Edward was stabbed and killed, probably by members of his own household. He was only about 16 years old. Edward was buried at Wareham but was later regarded as a martyr and saint. His death cleared the way for the accession of Æthelred II, whose troubled reign would be dominated by renewed Viking invasions.
