Charles II was born on 29 May 1630 at St James’s Palace and became King of England, Scotland and Ireland following the restoration of the monarchy in **1660**. He had spent years in exile after the execution of his father, Charles I, and briefly claimed the Scottish throne before being defeated at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Known as the **”Merry Monarch”**, Charles presided over a lively court and encouraged the arts and sciences. His reign also witnessed the **Great Plague of 1665** and the **Great Fire of London in 1666**. Charles died on **6 February 1685** at Whitehall Palace without legitimate surviving children and was succeeded by his Catholic brother James II.
